James “Bigdog” London

Name: JAMES “BIGDOG” LONDON

Age: 36

Marital status: MARRIED

City: CLEVELAND OHIO

Occupation: FORMER SECURITY GUARD– NOW DISABLED

I was asked by a friend to fill in for a match or two while the regular guy was on vacation. I ended up being the best player on the team from night one so they asked me to stay. They were in the lowest division in the Cleveland darter league, one of the better teams saw me throw the second night and they asked me to play with them. I said no at first but after a year or two I made the decision to take darts seriously so they picked me up and the rest is history.

In which league(s) do you play?                        Cleveland dart club in Cleveland Ohio

How far from home do you play?          3-4 miles.

How many days per week do you engage in darts? When I was serious in the early to mid 90’s, 3-4 nights a week. Now that im old and worn out just one night is good.

What kind of darts do you use: weight/ brand? 26gm darts and it’s a generic fixed point. I tried hammerheads and they just never seemed to work for me.

What other activity/sport do you participate in or watch? I coach all three of my kids baseball teams and I love football!!!!!!

What is the most annoying antic you see from other dart players? Ssssssssssllllllllllllllloooooooooooowwwwwww Play. Goofing off between throws. Going to buy a round of beer when its your turn.

Is league night too long, too short, just right? Just a tad on the long side. But to get the games in people want to play its about right.

On which team(s) do you play? Bobby O’s darters out of Bobby O’s tavern in Lakewood Ohio

How do you pick a team to play on? You either become a captain and start your own team or you know people. Or you can be real good and teams will ask you to come play for them.

Which other family members play?        none

Tell us about conflicts darts create in home or work life? None really for me. When I played a lot I worked third shift so darts was before work. Now that I don’t play so much the wife and kids have pretty much taken up the place of darts.

What keeps you playing darts? Love for the sport. Every time I try to leave I miss it a lot and try to get back in. I hadn’t played in about two years when I heard about a trails tournament where the browner was adding 150+ dollars to the payout. So I decided to go and I finished top 8 in singles and won doubles. So much for getting out of darts. (lol)

What goals in darts do you have? My goals were to go to a major tournament and do well. In Cleveland we have a program called the tournament trails program. You can play any one of 4 nights at various bars. You get points for monies put in and rounds won. Once you accumulate so many points you are offered a trip to a major tourney in the USA. I went to the Vegas tourney in 1996 and got to the third round in singles 301. I also went to the Kentucky open in 2002 and won the blind draw on Saturday night with a great player named Alan Mathews.  But by far my biggest goal was to beat a ranked player and I did that in the early 90’s when I beat Gerald Verrier at the Cleveland dart tourney. He was ranked in the top 5 in the USA at the time. (by the way I got beat by Steve Brown the next round- also top 5)

What has been your best moment in darts? Also see above paragraph

What’s your advice to a newbie dart player? 3 things practice, practice and decide. I say decide because practice early is important but you also have to make a concise decision early on in your darting career. You have to sit down and say to yourself – how much time do I really want to dedicate to this? – How good do I really want to be? – Do I have the time and energy to devote 4-7 hours a day on practice and 3-4 hours a night 4-5 nights a week playing in leagues and in tourneys? – Do I have other responsibilities that will interfere with my goals?

And last how good do I want to be? -  If you’re not looking to be great don’t expect great things for little or no effort. If you want to be great don’t expect great things with no effort. You will most likely get out of darts what you put into darts.

Tell us about the beginning of your interest in darts.  My Dad gave me a dart board for Christmas when I was 12.  I practiced at home when I was a kid and then shot in the bars when I was old enough but I didn’t shoot in any leagues though until I was in my late 20’s.

What other activity/sport do you participate in or watch?  Auto Racing & Tennis

What is the most annoying antic you see from other dart players?  The guys that complain that “somebody else” on the team lost the match for them.  It’s never their fault though (even when they are the one having the bad night).

Is league night too long, too short, just right?      Just right for me.

On which team(s) do you play?             Naceville Hotel, Nesquehoning Fire Co., Monocacy Sportsman’s Club

How do you pick a team to play on?  I’ve never really picked a team but you need to enjoy the company of the players on the team where you end up and I have been lucky as far as that goes.

Which other family members play? One brother shoots in a league and another brother shoots occasionally.  My Dad was a good player but he never shot competitively.

Tell us about conflicts darts create in home or work life?  You need to make the time in your schedule or you let down your team.  We all have conflicts from time to time but some players just seem to create their own problems.

What keeps you playing darts?  I just enjoy it so much and I have been doing it for so long that I wouldn’t know what to do without it.

What goals in darts do you have?           I still think I have my best high league average ahead of me yet!

What has been your best moment in darts?  That’s an easy question.  Winning the inaugural A.B.D.A. National Championship on the team “VIP Darts” with my friends Ed Kanick and the late B.J. Gerber.

What’s your advice to a newbie dart player?  Just try to relax and have a good time.  If you find out that you have some natural talent then take it as far as you can and still enjoy it.  Don’t let the bad times get the best of you!  Sooner or later the law of averages will come over in your favor!

Dennis Clotz

Name: DENNIS CLOTZ

Age: 40

Marital status: MARRIED

City: MACEDONIA, OHIO

Occupation: MACHINIST

Tell us about the beginning of your interest in darts.  As far back as I can remember I have always been around a dart board. Cardboard dartboards, magnetic dartboards, bristle dartboards, at home, at friend’s homes, at relative’s homes, at bars, at the Y.M.C.A., I thought it was just part of life! When my older friends turned 21 they joined leagues and it was my destiny to do the same when I came of age.

In which league(s) do you play? CLEVELAND DARTER CLUB

Which other family members play? My wife, 2 sons, and daughter all play darts for fun. My wife played in leagues many years ago.

How far from home do you play? 0-20 MILES.

How many days per week do you engage in darts? 1 league night but as much practice and as many pick games as possible.

What kind of darts do you use: weight/ brand? 24 GRAM HAMMER HEAD GT

What is the most annoying antic you see from other dart players? Lack of attention, poor sportsmanship, and poor score keeping habits.

Tell us about conflicts darts create in home or work life? Other than I neglect household responsibilities to practice sometimes; I have none.

What goals in darts do you have? Since I had left organized darts for a period of 10 years, which was soon after I became a legitimate competitor playing against some of the best names in the Cleveland Darter Club in the mid 90′s; I have set the goal for myself to return to that level of competition. I have never had a desire to reach anymore than an amateur state but would like to be recognized as legitimate competition at whatever level of play I choose to compete, I am unsure I will devote as much time as is needed to accomplish this goal but as

long as I play darts it will always be there.

What has been your best moment in darts? I cannot say I have one, but if I were to define something I would say that I have always reached whatever goals that I have set for myself in darts, since I had left darts for a period of 10 years I am repeating the process.

What’s your advice to a newbie dart player? Practice as good as you want to become and don’t forget about those you have left behind, soon you’ll find there isn’t enough competition and you’ll be asking yourself why?

What would make your league better and more fun? The Cleveland Darter Club offers high quality leagues and is continually evolving to accomplish these things, I am unsure I have any one suggestion for this; I will have to see what is to come.

What does the sport need to help it grow/ improve its image? I think active participation with those who currently are not involved with a dart club would be the best place to start. I believe because of the addictive nature people have for the sport of darts they tend to look ahead to where they want to go and forget to stop and help along the way. Darts has been around for a long time and will continue to be around even longer, somewhere along the way an effective means of promotion will be discovered.

How far would you travel to see national championship playoffs?  If they weren’t nearby I wouldn’t go out of my way.

Which game would interest you most in a national championship: ( )301 (X) 501( ) Cricket

Should a national championship be best of=A0 ( ) 3 ( ) 5 (X) 7 ( ) 11
